Bioethics and Ethical Oversight Policy

The "Bulletin of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv: Biology" adheres to the highest standards of scientific publication ethics. We require authors to strictly observe international and national norms when conducting research involving humans, animals, the use of biological materials, and personal data.

General Requirements

All manuscripts submitted to the journal that describe experimental work must contain clear confirmation that the research was conducted in accordance with ethical norms.

Obtaining Mandatory Ethical Approval

If the research falls under the scope of relevant legislation of Ukraine and ethical norms (work with vertebrate animals, clinical studies involving humans, work with embryonic tissues, etc.), authors are obliged to obtain approval from the relevant ethics committee prior to the commencement of experiments.

For researchers of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the relevant body is the Committee on Bioethics of Scientific Research.

For researchers from other institutions, the relevant committees at the place of the research.

Researchers must submit a copy of the approval (permit) together with the manuscript as a separate file, selecting the file type as Research Materials. The author(s) must provide this file upon the request of the Editorial Board if the permit was not attached during the initial submission. During submission, a note must be made in the Data Availability Statement indicating that "The Editorial Board has been provided with a copy of the research permit."

In the Article Text In the text of the article (section "Methods"), authors must state that all manipulations were performed in accordance with international and national norms, and that the research was approved by the bioethics committee of the relevant institution.

Research Involving Humans

Any research involving humans must comply with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki of the World Medical Association.

Authors must obtain voluntary written informed consent from all research participants (and/or their legal representatives) before including them in the study. The presence of such consent must be stated in the text of the article.

Authors are obliged to protect the confidentiality of participants. Any data that allows for the identification of a person (names, initials, medical record numbers, photographs of faces) must not be published unless scientifically necessary and without the explicit written consent of the patient. All data processing is conducted in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On Personal Data Protection" dated 01.06.2010 No. 2297-VI.

Research Involving Animals

Authors must guarantee compliance with the European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrate Animals used for Experimental and other Scientific Purposes (Strasbourg, 1986) and the Law of Ukraine "On Protection of Animals from Cruelty" dated 21.02.2006 No. 3447-IV.

In the "Methods" section, when describing experiments with laboratory animals, it is necessary to indicate which recommendations regarding work with animals (national, institutional) were followed during these procedures.

The Editorial Board reserves the right to request a copy of the bioethics committee's conclusion or to reject the manuscript in the absence of such confirmation.
